Position Overview

Cascadia is currently seeking a Project Assistant for its Seattle office to support work related to resource conservation, recycling, and materials management implementation projects. The primary work of this position will be direct interactions with people in apartment and condominium buildings, small businesses, and single-family homes throughout the Puget Sound region. This community outreach will compose approximately 70% of the time and will require the ability to effectively communicate with diverse populations. Examples of work include the following:
 Conducting in-person outreach at multifamily housing complexes and businesses to educate residents and business representatives about recycling and composting, resource conservation, and pollution prevention.
 Performing site assessments and providing technical assistance to property managers of multifamily buildings on improving recycling and composting services.
 Coordinating with waste and recycling service providers on service-related issues, and coordinating service changes as needed.
 Using mobile devices, cloud-based data tools, and customer relationship management (CRM) software to track interactions and collect data in the field.
 Preparing outreach materials for distribution, and coordinating outreach schedules and logistics.
In addition to outreach projects, work may involve conducting telephone surveys and business outreach phone calls, performing office-based desktop research and data entry, hand-sorting waste samples (waste characterization studies), event staffing and related logistics coordination, and providing assistance with writing memos and various other project-related documents.

Candidate Profile

This position requires a candidate with the following qualifications:
 Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both in person and over the phone.
 Desire to learn more about waste reduction and recycling, water efficiency, stormwater, and wastewater pollution prevention. Prior environmental consulting industry experience is preferred but not required.
 Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on efficiency and accuracy in carrying out administrative tasks.
 Ability to multitask, prioritize, stay organized, and meet critical deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
 Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, with a willingness to expand skills.
 Strong level of comfort working with technology, including tablet computers.
 Ability to work independently, think creatively, and use sound judgment to resolve issues.
 Cultural competency and emotional intelligence, including the ability to connect respectfully with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Bilingual or multilingual capabilities in languages commonly spoken in the Puget Sound region or experience working in a foreign country are highly desired.
 Willingness to work both in teams and independently to advance common goals and create high-quality work products.
 A willingness and desire to take on new challenges and responsibilities.
 Valid driver’s license and comfort with driving (personal vehicle not required).
 Ability to stand or walk on uneven surfaces for up to 8 hours per day.
 Ability to lift or move up to 20 pounds.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a temporary, full-time position, with the expectation of 40 work hours per week for a six-month timeframe and with the possibility of extension. The work may require flexible hours, may have designated hours including weekends and evenings, and can include short but intensive periods of work. Compensation will be based on an hourly rate and is competitive with jobs in the environmental sector. For the right candidate, this position may provide the opportunity for a transition to a permanent position.
