Do you love inspiring children by teaching awareness, understanding, and appreciation for the natural world? Pacific Science Center is looking for educators to teach science-based environmental education programs at the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center (MSEEC) in Bellevue. MSEEC Educators teach awareness, understanding, appreciation, and a sense of stewardship for the natural world, through science-based environmental education programs.

The Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center is a collaboration between Pacific Science Center and the City of Bellevue, Washington. During the school year we teach programs to school groups, scouts, and families. In the summer we run environmental education-focused day camps for grades preK-12 with a wide variety of themes.

We are currently seeking 3 educators. One will work an average of 6 hours per week exclusively focusing their time in support of our weekend B’earthday and scouts programs. The other two positions will focus their work in support of school field studies programs and camps Monday through Friday. These positions work approximately 28 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours per week during the summer. They will occasionally work weekends and evenings.

Regardless of schedule, our educators bring a variety of programs to life and inspire guests of all kinds. The ideal candidate will have the following: Experience teaching preschool and elementary age students; Group management skills; Flexibility and the ability to think on your feet during unexpected and stressful situations; Excellent communication skills including a high level of comfort with large groups; Ability to maintain enthusiasm and positive outlook; Smiling team player; Knowledge of fresh water wetlands; Valid License and clean drivers record in order to drive 15 passenger van (training provided); First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain.

It is important to consider that most programs split their time evenly between indoor labs and outdoor hikes. Educators must be able to work outside in inclement weather and in a variety of conditions including mosquitoes and muddy trails. They must be able to walk 3 miles with students and carry up to 20 pound class bins and assist with carrying, loading and paddling of canoes. This is a non-benefited, temporary role through August 2015. There may be opportunities to continue past August, depending on work availability. Hours vary by season. During the spring educators may work up to 29.5 hours per week, in summer up to 40 hours per week.
