Sustainable Seattle is a nonprofit organization that advances individual, neighborhood, city, and regional sustainability through strategic partnerships, shared learning, and multi-stakeholder actions. Founded in 1991 in the spirit of the Rio Convention on Development and the Environment, Sustainable Seattle is thought to be the first “Sustainable Community” organization, where today there are hundreds of sustainable state, county, city, and community organizations. We issued our first set of community indicators for sustainability in 1993, and won an award in 1996 from the United Nations for “Excellence in Indicators Best Performance” for our second indicators report. Sustainable Seattle has given rise to leaders in the sustainability field, including major consultants, policy makers and business leaders.

Sustainable Seattle has three program areas: Emerging People, Projects and Ideas, Community Connections and Indicators into Actions. Our major projects within these programs include B-Sustainable.org and Dream a Sound Future Competition. B-sustainable.org is our fourth iteration of indicators. It was designed to shift the field of sustainability in terms of users and its process. Dream a Sound Future is a design competition inviting our community to create the blueprint for a sustainable future.

Position Overview:

Sustainable Seattle is seeking a Marketing and Public Relations manager to lead our program areas. Immediate emphasis will be on our B-sustainalbe.org and Dream a Sound Future projects, with later focus on a professional training and an awards project. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to break into the sustainability field or someone new to the field looking to quick-start a career.

The Marketing and Public Relations manager will lead the development and implementation of marketing and public relations plans and actions including social networking, event planning,
will learn about the inner-workings of a political non-profit, by supporting outreach and event planning projects, researching a broad range of policy issues, attending staff meetings, and helping to keep our database current. Interns will finish their time at PSN with a broader range of knowledge about progressive policy and political organizing and students are welcome to use this opportunity to receive credit.

Responsibilities:
• Work in partnership with the executive director
• Manage the strategic development of Sustainable Seattle marketing, communications and public relations for projects, programs and entity
• Program, project and entity event planning
• Manage social networking tools
• Working with the executive director to write, produce and distribute annual report

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate is:
• Passionate about sustainability, internally driven and a self-starter;
• Works well with others and independently;
• Excellent verbal, writing and computer skills, including blogspot, facebook, my space, NING, and, preferably, knowledge of or interest in learning rudimentary knowledge of Plone.
• Creative, intelligent and energetic with a desire to learn and contribute to progress towards sustainability through our programs and our process and has experience with no or low budget circumstances.
• Has persistence, experience and capacity to contribute to the development of programs and projects so as to bring in funding for further marketing and public relations, including creating a paying job from a volunteer position.
• Capable of articulating complex issues to audiences with varying levels of sophistication
