Washington Wilderness Coalition is seeking an entrepreneurial Development Director to lead multiple fundraising efforts for our grassroots organization. Since the success of the Wild Sky campaign in 2008, many new opportunities are emerging and we are looking to grow financially to take advantage of these opportunities. We are seeking a team player willing to grow along with us.

Washington Wilderness Coalition has built coalitions including business, backcountry users, local elected officials, and conservationists to find innovative ways to protect the last remaining wild areas in Washington.

The Development Director is a full-time, exempt position that is supervised by the Executive Director, and is located in our Greenwood office in Seattle. The Development Director serves as the fundraising leader working collaboratively with the Executive Director to increase the capacity of Washington Wilderness and achieve the organization’s mission.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide strong leadership of the development program, motivating and organizing the Board of Directors, staff, and other partners around a common vision and strategy for fundraising;
• Work with the Executive Director to create, implement and evaluate an annual development plan and budget, and play a primary role in developing and implementing the sub-plans for major donors, membership, corporate contributions and foundations, in alignment with the organization’s strategic plan;
• Work with the Executive Director to regularly communicate with and fundraise from members, including renewals mailings and follow-up phone calls, fundraising appeals, acknowledgement letters, electronic and other communications;
• Coordinate with the Outreach and Policy staff to ensure consistency in messaging and strategies;
• Manage a complex development database;
• Develop tools for monitoring the effectiveness of our fundraising efforts, and make strategy adjustments based on results
• Research new sources of funding;
• With the support of program staff and the Executive Director, prepare, submit and track the status of grant proposals and reports;
• Coordinates Wilderness Visions, the annual fundraising event and develop other, smaller events to recruit and cultivate members and donors, if appropriate;
• Supervise fundraising staff and volunteers. Staff currently includes 1 to 2 part-time Telephone Outreach staff.


The ideal candidate will have a cross-section of fundraising skills and experiences. Washington Wilderness Coalition has a talented and committed staff who each contribute to fundraising success.

• Training and/or experience in membership programs, donor development, grant writing, grant management and reporting, event planning, database management, and budgeting is highly desired;
• Commitment to wilderness protection, commitment to successful fundraising, good sense of humor and willingness to cooperate with others;
• Demonstrated fundraising success;
• Strong personal organizational skills and the ability to manage complex time deadlines;
• Experience with fundraising databases and donor tracking systems;
• Ability to be a persuasive development writer, including grant proposals, cases for support, appeal letters, etc.;
• A self-starter with an entrepreneurial attitude and willingness to learn;
• The capacity to communicate verbally in a compelling, persuasive and concise manner the mission and plans of Washington Wilderness Coalition, with the goal of securing gifts, grants, and investments;
• Comfort with a very hands-on collaborative, innovative office environment typical of small organizations, while at the same time bringing greater strategic and long-term deliberative discussion to the table;
• Familiarity with PC applications, including Microsoft Office applications;
• Valid driver’s license. Mileage allowance is provided if using your own vehicle.
