The Brightwater Center and the surrounding 72 acre park were build as mitigation for the Brightwater Treatment Plant. Over 60 community groups, neighbors and educations asked for a park, gathering place and environmental learning center. These facilities will be open to the public in September 2011. The project was made possible by a unique partnership between King County Wastewater Treatment Division and Friends of the Hidden River (FOHR). This group of exceptional educators has tirelessly raised money and involved the community in possibilities for The Center. FOHR has played an integral role in shaping plans for the Center and to date have secured more than $1 million in grant funding for the facility. The community gathering spaces at the Brightwater Center will provide meeting spaces for community groups, conferences, business meetings and other special events. The center is pursuing Platinum level certification through the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED standard.

Looking forward, King County is building on this partnership ethic to establish the center as a national leader in environmental education.
