In the U.S. alone, 35 million kids have experienced serious trauma such as violence or abuse before their 18th birthday. That’s 1 out of 2 school-age children. Just as alarming, nearly 1 in 3 preteens and teens have experienced two or more childhood traumas adverse enough to damage their physical and mental health into adulthood. Without the right tools to manage their emotions, build resilience, and begin to recover, these kids risk a downward spiral of anxiety, depression, learning deficits, behavioral problems, social and emotional isolation, dropping out, and addiction.

For two decades, Art with Heart has provided direct services to kids facing trauma and adversity, working 1:1 with kids using our age-appropriate, expert-developed, therapeutic activity books in schools, camps, and therapy offices. Since our inception, we have reached over 180,000 kids with tools to build resilience and hope for their lives. We also use our Leader’s Companion guides and in person or online trainings to empower practitioners lead creative expression programs with kids.

Our ongoing collaboration with teachers, school counselors, and child psychologists has clearly shown: the need is greater than any 1:1 program can meet. Past programs saw us using internal resources and staff to reach 25 kids at a time. In 2017 we shifted the conversation: Could we reach more kids with a train-the-trainer model – and maintain our program quality, depth, and success? Because we have successful tools to help kids begin to heal their trauma – and because the need is a growing, vital, public-health interest – we’re now training practitioners to lead our programs and maximize our impact on kids.

Art with Heart helps kids turn pain into possibility and despair into hope. The Director of Advancement will be essential to securing the funding necessary to fuel the organization’s vision to serve 3.5MM of the 35MM kids facing trauma in America over the next 10 years.
