Background
The NW Energy Coalition is an alliance of about 100 environmental, civic, and human service organizations, progressive utilities and businesses in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia. We promote development of energy efficiency and renewable energy, low-income and consumer protection in energy policy decisions, and fish and wildlife restoration on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Energy policy is critical to the Northwest’s economic and environmental health. Ensuring that individual utilities, state governments and the region pursue clean and affordable energy strategies for meeting the region’s energy needs is a central focus.

Job Description
Overall this position will support the Coalition’s advocacy goals with an overarching communication strategy. The Director of Communication oversees all facets of communications work, including writing, media, and marketing. The Director of Communication works with Coalition staff, members and allies to ensure that strategic messages, plans and outcomes support our organizational objectives. S/he develops and aligns the Coalition’s communication strategy with state and regional allies to ensure that plans and actions are timely, creative and effective. This position will oversee the Coalition’s outreach associate, who is responsible for membership cultivation and organizing the Coalition’s twice-yearly energy conferences.

This position is located at our downtown Seattle office in the historic Colman building.

Principal duties and responsibilities

Strategy and Marketing
• Develop and implement a Coalition communication plan. Track goals. Apply lessons learned to development of future plans.
• Provide communication, marketing, message strategy and coordination for the Coalition.
• Work cooperatively with Coalition member organizations and allies to develop communication strategies on joint efforts.
• Represent the Coalition within the community – on panels, work groups, strategy sessions, in meetings, etc.
• Develop opportunities to enhance Coalition exposure.

Writing and Editing
• Write quotes, op-eds, media releases and statements, action alerts, blog posts, fact sheets, and membership updates.
• Write executive summaries and digests of Coalition materials.
• Edit and ensure consistent themes and messaging for internal staff products - issue papers, fact sheets, letters, web postings, reports and legislative wrap-ups.
• In collaboration with policy and outreach staff - research key facts and conclusions for use in Coalition materials.
• Translate complex policy concepts into digestible language for the membership and board.

Media and Public Relations
• Cultivate relationships with reporters, bloggers, and editorial board writers; maintain media lists.
• Proactively pitch stories to bloggers, newspapers, radio and TV outlets; prepare staff to respond to media inquires.
• Manage rapid response needs, often in coordination with allies.
• Ensure social media and website content is fresh and relevant.
• Envision and help produce graphics, infographics, and images that convey our work.
• Monitor all types of news outlets, wires and related publications -- distribute relevant material and stories to the membership and staff.

Management
• Oversee the workplan and daily activities of 1 FTE (Outreach Associate).
• Provide guidance and support as needed to the Outreach Associate.
• Work collaboratively with Development, Administrative and Policy staff.
• Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications
Required:
o Bachelor’s degree and at least five years communication/public relations experience; additional experience may substitute for a degree
o Excellent writing, editing, and public speaking skills
o Proven ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment
o Knowledge of integrated communications tools and tactics, including new (e.g. website and evolving social media, blogs, etc.) and traditional (e.g. press releases, etc.) media resources
o Self-motivation, initiative, and problem-solving skills
o Ability to manage multiple tactical projects while advancing cohesive overarching strategy

Desirable:
o Knowledge of design and branding principles
o Existing media relationships in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana
o Experience working in a non-profit setting with a mission-driven staff and board
o Exposure to public policy development and advocacy
o Management experience
o An interest in clean energy

Salary and benefits: Salary $50,000 to $55,000 DOE. Excellent benefits include generous medical, dental and vision insurance, four weeks paid vacation, 10 paid holidays and employer-matching retirement plan. NWEC is an equal opportunity employer.
