Are we Reinventing our Cities for Resilience?

The cranes are back! It’s no surprise to those of you who already know that we are living in the fastest growing urban region in the country. By 2030 it is predicted we will have 30% more residents living here. Where will they live, work, and play? How will they get around? Will we have an affordable energy supply? Will there be food security for all?

All of these questions and more will be part of a cross-sector action-team oriented event that Sustainable Seattle is launching on October 2nd called the Pacific Northwest Resilience Challenge. The economic, social, and environmental health of our region depends on our overall resilience. We need to be able to attract a healthy, skilled labor force that will work in our growing industries.

Modern society tends to be clustered in silos of interest, resources and decision-making. Global markets challenge the adaptive capacity of local civic institutions and legal frameworks. But in order to adapt to changing 21st century social and environmental conditions, our institutions will need to be more collaborative, nimble and creative. All of our critical systems at risk are interdependent. The solutions to resilience cannot be found within a silo, a department or a single technical profession. Building resilience into our cities is not a technical problem. It is a political and economic problem that will likely have some technical solutions. The PNW Resilience Challenge provides an opportunity to bring together people from across the political, civic and economic spectrum, to explore the ways and means to achieving a brighter future for us all.
