What are the opportunities for citizen participation among rural women in Guatemala? How do we ensure diverse interests are met and empower local citizens and leaders to make change in their communities? How does inclusion of traditionally marginalized populations in community development relate to issues of sustainability here in Seattle?

Join Sustainable Seattle for a discussion of citizen engagement among marginalized populations in Guatemala based on Caitlin McKee's experience in the Peace Corps. Ms. McKee will discuss her work starting and running a Municipal Women's Office in the rural village she resided in for two years in order to address women's-specific needs relating to health, education, housing, economic opportunities, and citizen participation. She will present on the Guatemalan system of Community Development Councils and address efforts to empower rural Guatemalan women and increase their civic engagement. She will then facilitate a discussion on strategies to promote grassroots efforts to address the challenges of marginalized populations in accessing services, voicing opinions, and contributing to community development.
