How is climate change impacting weather in our region? Will floods and droughts be the new normal? And how will people and wildlife cope? This Climate Science on Tap event will examine the relationship between extreme weather events and our changing climate.
This Climate Science on Tap event will bring three local climate researchers to present and answer questions about the latest on how salmon will be impacted by warming stream water and changes in seasonal flow around the Pacific Northwest. The event is co-sponsored by Cascadia Climate Action and Puget Soundkeepers Alliance with media sponsor KBCS and support from Peddler Brewing. Puget Soundkeepers Alliance will receive $1 for each pint sold to support their good work for the Sound ecosystem. Come early to enjoy the food truck, great beer and a Climate Trivia Game with prizes!
How do we know humans are disrupting the Earth’s climate? Will we feel the impacts here in the Pacific Northwest? Will this affect winter sports, water supply, and shell fish? What can we do? Come learn about these and other implications of a warming planet from UW PhD student Judy Twedt, Department of Atmospheric Sciences. Information about upcoming climate talks and events will be provided, along with opportunities to become involved in climate action.
When infant oysters began dying off in record numbers, reportedly due to the increased acidification of Pacific Northwest waters, the Washington State Legislature asked the UW Dept of Oceanography’s scientists for help. Parker MacCready, PhD, a physical oceanographer and led a team that used quantities of data to forecast the chemistry of ocean waters entering shellfish growing areas, such as Padilla Bay. Come learn how this work may help oysters and the shellfish industry, as well as salmon fishers, kayakers and oil spill trackers!
