Join Backyard Barter, a project sponsored by Seattle Tilth and funded through the City of Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods, as we barter homegrown and homemade food with our neighbors! There is only one rule for this event: no cash allowed!

The event will begin with a potluck with the barter to start concurrently. This is a great opportunity to share your homemade food, items and related skills in a fun community environment! Past events have featured such items as delicious canned food, a live duck, microbrews and wine, seedlings and starters, and fresh eggs!

Learn the most important considerations in caring for a small flock of hens in limited space, including chicken physiology, behavior, health, nutrition, housing and city regulations. Questions are encouraged in this lecture-based class and you will leave with the knowledge you need to start raising chickens in your own backyard.

It’s summer. Are you thinking about your fall and winter garden? This is the time of year to get things started so you can be eating fresh vegetables at Halloween and beyond. Learn what seeds to sow this month and how to place those plants successfully into your overflowing late-summer garden. A little planning and effort now will pay off deliciously during the dark days of winter! This class will be outdoors with hands-on activities. Please dress for the weather and messy garden soil.

Get tickets for Seattle Tilth’s Chicken Coop and Urban Farm Tour held on Saturday, July 9 and find out how people are incorporating animals and food production into their home landscape. On this self-guided tour you can choose from 50 urban and suburban sites in the greater Seattle area. Hosts will showcase a wide variety of animals and agricultural practices, and tour participants will get face time with ducks, mini dairy goats, honey bees, geese, sheep--even a cow and horse. Cost is $12 per person, or $10 for Seattle Tilth members.
