Join Backyard Barter, a project sponsored by Seattle Tilth and funded through the City of Seattle's Department of Neighborhoods, as we barter homegrown and homemade food with our neighbors! There is only one rule for this event: no cash allowed!

The event will begin with a potluck with the barter to start concurrently. This is a great opportunity to share your homemade food, items and related skills in a fun community environment! Past events have featured such items as delicious canned food, a live duck, microbrews and wine, seedlings and starters, and fresh eggs!

If you want to fill your pantry and refrigerator with basic ingredients to use in your cooking, or are simply curious about learning culinary skills beyond meal preparation, these classes are for you! Bake bread; make jams and jellies; craft cheese and butter; learn the art of fermentation; prepare mustards, herbal vinegars and oils; and learn how to use edible flowers. Ingredients will be hand-picked on Dog Mountain Farm or provided by other local producers, and preparations will be done in the Farm's outdoor kitchen.

Many jam recipes call for lots of sugar in order to ensure fruit preservation, but the outcome is not only unhealthy, it often obscures the true taste of the fruit. This class will cover techniques to safely make low-sugar jams, and in the process you’ll learn basic canning and jam-making techniques. Shannon Valderas is a Seattle Tilth Master Food Preserver with many years of canning experience.
