Small Actions Lead to Big Changes

Several years ago I read a book called the Art of Happiness. The book was a collaboration between the Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler (a western psychologist). The whole book was based upon discussions between the two men. At one point in the book Cutler asks the Dalai Lama, "Is there something that you do everyday to help humanity?" With a twinkle in his eye, the author writes, the Dalai Lama said, "Ah yes, there is something, I turn out the light when I leave the room." In that simple act there is a profound truth. I truly believe that the simplest acts can cause the greatest changes.

If everyone were to pick one simple act to do our efforts would compound and have a tremendous effect on our planet. This is the idea behind One Million Acts of Green. The movement began in October 2008 in Canada and now its going global. Since the beginning the movement has been sponsored by Cisco Systems. Recently Cisco re-pledged its commitment to One Million acts to take it global.

An act of Green is described on the website as, “an opportunity to help the environment. It's you reducing your greenhouse gas emissions. It's your contribution to fighting global warming.”

I want to encourage everyone to take the time to go to the website and make their pledge for a better environment. I signed up and made my green pledge to reduce my carbon footprint. At the end of the survey I found out that my commitment to the environment will lower my carbon footprint by more than 1700 kg this year. Imagine if everyone in our 4,500+ Seattle community did that? What would Seattle look like? Small acts add up when they are compounded.
